It wasn’t long after Audrey left for the Scott house that Jake received a call on the hotel line from Will Grant.
“Are you ready?” Grant asked.
He’d just finished tying the laces of his Doc Martens. The boots were the only comfortable footwear he owned other than a pair of flip-flops, and his feet were already itching inside his socks.
“Yeah.”
“Meet me out front in five.”
Jake hung up and grabbed his jacket. He made sure he had his key card before leaving the suite.
Whether or not he was doing the right—or smart—thing didn’t occur to him. He did, however, realize that Audrey was probably going to be upset when she found out he had gotten himself involved. Not like he’d volunteered; Grant approached him. Generally he made it a habit to avoid anyone involved in the business of law and order, but a girl was dead and Audrey had herself all tied up in knots because of it.
He’d gotten the call yesterday, before Audrey arrived back at the hotel. Grant asked him if he’d help with a little undercover work. Jake had almost laughed, but he agreed to do what he could. It hadn’t taken much enticement. As soon as Grant told him it was work that Audrey wouldn’t have to do, he jumped at it.
The woman was his weakness. Always had been. From that first meeting when they were very young, when Audrey had been mad over losing her ice cream—Lincoln’s fault, the bastard—and Jake got her a new one, she’d fascinated him. She’d probably end up being his downfall, but he’d resigned himself to it already. Those years they’d been apart—Stillwater and after she left for college—he’d missed her, but he hadn’t realized just how much. It took her walking back into his life for him to realize that his world was a little brighter with her in it, fucked up as she was.
Not like he was any great prize, though according to her, he was prettier than Grant. Yeah, he wasn’t all that sure it was a compliment. No man liked to be called “pretty,” unless maybe he was in drag. Still, she was the only woman who had ever held his interest. The only person he felt like he could show his true self to.
He grabbed a coffee at the hotel shop. By the time he’d fixed it the way he liked it and exited, Grant was just pulling up to the curb. Jake opened the door of the black Audi and stepped inside. It smelled of leather with a touch of cologne. Even the guy’s car was impressive. But it didn’t feel like a desperate bid to prove he had a big dick.
“Good morning,” Grant said.
“Yeah, hi.”
“Thanks again for doing this.”
Jake opened the tab on his coffee cup as the car moved toward the street. “What exactly is it you want me to do?” If it was illegal, he was going to feed the prosecutor his own teeth.
